Grandma’s Apple Cake

Sensory Objectives

Streusel can be blended with your fingers. It will feel both soft and gritty due to the sugar and flour. It will also feel a bit oily as the butter warms from your hands.

Speech Objectives

What category do apples belong to? What are some other kinds of fruits? Where do they grow? Do all fruits grow on trees? What are some of the parts of an apple (seeds, core, flesh, stem, skin, etc.)? How would you describe it? It’s crunchy, juicy, sweet, round, red or green or pink.



Instructions

Batter - Combine eggs, shortening, sugar and flour beat with a hand mixer until batter is smooth. Spread in a greased and floured 9x13 pan.

Apples - Layer slices of apples in rows with apples partially overlapping on top of batter so the whole cake is covered with apple slices.

Streusel - Cut butter into brown sugar and flour to create a pea sized crumble. Sprinkle the crumble generously over all of the apple slices.

Place cake on the middle rack of the oven, bake for 30 minutes. Watch for jus ta small amount of browning around the edges of the cake. At that time it should be done. Test with cake tester to see if bottom layer is done..
